Abstract
Learning about the Five Senses in Natural and Social Sciences (IPAS) for third-grade elementary students risks becoming verbal memorization without concrete sensory experience, especially when students still hold misconceptions about the senses and are disconnected from their local culture. This study aims to describe in depth the implementation of the "Jelajah Kampung Bangkalan" innovation, a STEAM-based IPAS lesson on the Five Senses that combines multisensory exploration with Madurese ethnopedagogy through five sensory exploration posts and a "Five Senses Explorer Passport" instrument, and to analyze the design, STEAM integration, students' experiences and engagement, the role of local ethnopedagogy, and implementation challenges of this innovation. A qualitative case study approach was used, involving 19 third-grade students (Class III-A) at SDN Tunjung 1, Bangkalan, as the research subjects; data were collected through initial cognitive-noncognitive assessment, participatory observation, and lesson documentation, then analyzed descriptively-percentage-wise for the readiness mapping and thematically for the observational and reflective data, with data validity ensured through source triangulation. Findings show the five-post design resembles a learning-station model combined with the experiential learning cycle and mindful, meaningful, joyful deep-learning principles. The initial assessment revealed misconceptions about the senses and students' unfamiliarity with serabi, a traditional Bangkalan snack, grounding the integration of Madurese ethnopedagogy, particularly the Song-Osong Lombhung philosophy. The lesson also applied Teaching at the Right Level differentiation based on readiness mapping, and the main challenge was classroom management during outdoor, station-based learning. This study does not test effectiveness statistically, but provides a contextual description for elementary teachers designing multisensory, differentiated, locally rooted IPAS instruction.
